Abueva saves the day as Phoenix holds off NLEX


Phoenix Fuel Masters pulled off a huge escape act, coming away with an 83-82 victory in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Matthew Wright spearheaded Phoenix’s offense but it was Calvin Abueva’s big defensive stop late that saved the Fuel Masters from stubborn NLEX which came back from a 17-point deficit.

As a result, the Fuel Masters kept its top spot in the team standings as they continued their undefeated run, winning five games in a row.

Wright ended up with 17 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Jason Perkins had a double-double outing, tallying 14 markers and 11 rebounds, while Calvin Abueva had 13 points and 11 boards before he wrapped up the win with a big block on NLEX’s potential game-winning play.

JR QuiƱahan paced the Road Warriors with 14 points, Bong Galanza had 12, while JP Erram collected 11 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort as NLEX went down to 2-4 in the standings.
